Good FAITH ESTIMATE
Under the law, you have the right to receive a “good faith estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. The law requires health care providers to provide patients who do not have or are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.
This law is intended to provide transparency regarding expected medical charges and to protect patients from surprise medical bills.
With regard to mental health treatment, determining a total cost of care for the entirety of treatment can be challenging. Duration of treatment depends on many factors including but not limited to patient goals, complexity of diagnostic concerns, history of trauma and abuse, and current life stressors. Some patients are satisfied with a reduction in symptoms while others prefer to continue as long as it feels beneficial. Therefore, in your Good Faith Estimate, we can only provide you cost per session, not a definitive cost of the entire treatment episode.
For therapy patients, in the first follow up session after your initial assessment, we will discuss treatment recommendations. Throughout treatment, goals and progress will be reviewed. Your estimate will be provided verbally and will be available in your patient portal. Though the law states that if you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, this is not applicable to our practice as we can only concretely provide the cost for each session and are unable to definitively predict the total length of therapy.
